182 picture postcards from the Wright family of Forest Glen, Maryland
These picture postcards were sent to Frederick William Wright (1894–1970), and saved by him,
from his boyhood in Forest Glen, Montgomery County, Maryland, through his college years and the end of
the First World War. Fred was the youngest of the five children of Dr. George H. Wright (Cornell, 1882), who ran
a sanitarium at Forest Glen (the Wright Sanitarium, also called Carroll Springs Sanitarium), and
Jessie W. (Waite) Wright (1857–1952), herself a physician. His brothers and sisters were
Wallace W. (b. 1885), George Van Valkenburg (“Van”, b. 1888, by 1917 the sanitarium’s superintendent), Lucy (b. about 1889) and
Dr. Katherine W. Wright (b. about 1892), a psychiatrist in Chicago.
Fred in the 1915 Reveille, the yearbook of the Maryland Agricultural College:
“He doesn’t say much, ’tis clear / He’ll make a first rate engineer.”
The cards follow Fred from “Master Fred Wright” to the Maryland Agricultural College at College Park
(today the University of Maryland), where from 1912 to 1915 he studied mechanical engineering, joined
Kappa Alpha, rose to cadet lieutenant and was athletic editor of the 1915 yearbook; to his father’s university,
Cornell, where he entered Sibley College in 1915 and graduated in Mechanical Engineering in June 1917;
then through summer work in 1917, officers’ training at Camp Meade in 1918,
and an unmailed card from Ochtendung, Germany, written in December 1918. They come from his parents, his
brothers and sisters, and a wide circle of friends.
Fred was the father of Mary Alice (Wright) Wilson. The cards were scanned and transcribed by her son,
Rick Wilson, in 2026. Transcriptions keep the original spelling; [?] marks a
word that could not be read with confidence, and dates come from the postmarks unless noted.

Message written sideways; 'Sincerely / Mary' and the surname run off the bottom edge. Addressed to Linden then 'Wright Sanitarium, Forest Glen' (the family's sanitarium). Mary had been staying there (perhaps a patient) and Fred had been kind to her. Same writer as Mary G. on 1913_Postcards_0015 (probably Mary Gedeon, 0014).
Same Dot as 1912_Postcards_0003 and 0006 (Fortress Monroe). Addressed to Fred at M.A.C., College Park, in March 1913. Postmark day's second digit faint (Easter 1913 was March 23).
I wrote Isabelle, and she wouldn't answer, and so you'll just have to take my word - In regard to that "some one" "if you don't get my drift, I'll snow again", Get me? I'm so sorry my letter sounded cross, for you know I could not fuss with you. Fred, you ought to have been at the German and you wouldn't say anything about Manassas Sincerely Dorothy [picture side:] I reckon I won't ever see you again unless you come to Manassas as the Bissett girls are mad at me as they haven't written a word since I left. They don't teach us here to use such words of comprehension as "Get me", so I learned this elsewhere.

Message continues in the margins of the picture side. Addressed to Fred at Hyattsville, Md. (near College Park / M.A.C.), so by spring 1913 Fred was probably at Maryland Agricultural College. Dorothy, a student at the Manassas school ('they don't teach us here'), had been near Fred ('since I left'); 'the German' is a dance. Possibly the same girl as 'Dot' (1912 cards from Fortress Monroe) and the Mary of 1913_Postcards_0002 also wrote from Manassas.
You asked me to let you know when the recital was going to be, it is this Sat. Hope I shall see you. Am coming on the train that gets there about 9:30. I am looking for a letter. Sincerely, Mary G.

German view card of Ochtendung near Koblenz (Coblenz), not mailed. The writer was there Dec. 11-12, 1918, a month after the Armistice, when the U.S. Third Army was marching into the Koblenz occupation zone; probably a soldier's souvenir, likely Fred's own (he was in officers' training at Camp Meade in May 1918), but unsigned. Pencil, written sideways.
People
Senders and people named on the cards, other than Fred. Numbers are cards; a ? marks a card matched to the sender by handwriting only.
The addresses on the cards follow Fred from his parents' sanitarium at Forest Glen to two colleges, two jobs and the Army. The places are numbered in the order he reached them, and the arrows show each move; the Washington-area places are on the smaller map. A forwarded card counts where it reached him. Some details come from Fred's pocket notebook of limericks, a Prudential Insurance giveaway he kept at Cornell in 1916–17 (it holds Cornell Daily Sun clippings of January 1917) and until the draft lottery of July 1917; Rick Wilson transcribed it in 1996. Ages come from the 136 cards with a known date; the 25 whose year is only a guess are listed but left off the timeline.
Each dot is a card, placed by its date (hollow: the year only); click one to see it

Fred had registered for the draft from Ithaca: his card, filled out before an Ithaca registrar on May 24, 1917 and stamped June 3 and June 5, gives his home as Forest Glen (Montgomery County, precinct 2-13), and describes him as tall and slender, with brown eyes and black hair; single, no exemption claimed. Its serial number, 2006, is the “Draft No” in his notebook, which also gives the number drawn for him in the lottery of July 1917 as “5792? 6137”, and Van's serial, 1988 (Van's card is filed just after Fred's). At its end is an undated list of what he left in his “old room” at home: in a suitcase a knit helmet, wristlets and wrist protectors, a camera, drawing instruments and a slide rule; in the trunk his overcoat, a sweater, pictures and a baseball glove. An unmailed card from Ochtendung, Germany, written December 11–12, 1918, may be his. Cards:179, 180
