Postcards to Fred Wright, 1904–1918

181 picture postcards from the Wright family of Forest Glen, Maryland

These picture postcards were sent to Frederick William Wright (1894–1970), and saved by him, from his boyhood in Forest Glen, Montgomery County, Maryland, through his college years and the end of the First World War. Fred was the youngest of the five children of Dr. George H. Wright, who ran a sanitarium at Forest Glen (the Wright Sanitarium, also called Carroll Springs Sanitarium), and Jessie W. (Waite) Wright (1857–1952), herself a physician. His brothers and sisters were Wallace W. (b. 1885), George Van Valkenburg (“Van”, b. about 1887), Lucy (b. about 1889) and Dr. Katherine W. Wright (b. about 1892), a psychiatrist in Chicago.

The cards follow Fred from “Master Fred Wright” to the Maryland Agricultural College at College Park, to Cornell University in Ithaca, through summer work in 1917, officers’ training at Camp Meade in 1918, and an unmailed card from Ochtendung, Germany, written in December 1918. They come from his parents, his brothers and sisters, and a wide circle of friends.

Fred was the father of Mary Alice (Wright) Wilson. The cards were scanned and transcribed by her son, Rick Wilson, in 2026. Transcriptions keep the original spelling; [?] marks a word that could not be read with confidence, and dates come from the postmarks unless noted.

Message starts on the address side and continues sideways across the picture. Addressed 'c/o Dr. Wright', so Fred's father (or a relative in the house) was a doctor.
